Thunder, Book #1 of the Stone Braide Chronicles by Bonnie S. Colhoun

Written in a similar vein to The Hunger Games or the Divergent series, Thunder has a teen-age heroine who needs to draw upon all her savvy to survive. There’s a handsome guy involved. Guns, hovercraft, innocent people being duped. All the markers of a young adult novel.

The setting is post-apocalyptic. Our girl, Selah, finds out she’s not who she thought she was on the day of her  birth remembrance. Her mother tells her the truth about her origins and sends her off so that she will survive. Selah realizes in her travels that everything her mother taught her was to prepare her for this time in her life.

Then there is ‘the Lander’, a young man who washed up on shore that Selah realizes holds some hidden key to her future, or at least some answers. He becomes her unwilling protector and together they go on an adventure to find her father, save a civilization, take care of an orphaned girl and try to keep from getting killed or captured.

Thunder is a great coming of age story. Available at your favourite book seller. Did I like it? Yes I did and so did my teen-age daughter. It’s too bad that it appears on our bookshelves after the other two series have caught so much attention. The themes are similar and Thunder is a worthy competitor.
